Robert Maxwell, 1st Earl of Farnham

Robert Maxwell, 1st Earl of Farnham († November 16, 1779 ) was an Irish politician and peer .

He was the eldest son of John Maxwell, 1st Baron Farnham and Judith Barry.

From 1743 to 1759 he was a member of the Irish House of Commons for Lisburn . When his father died on August 6, 1759, he inherited his title of nobility as 2nd Baron Farnham and thereby became a member of the Irish House of Lords . He was also a member of the British House of Commons for Taunton from 1754 to 1761 . In 1757 he was sheriff of County Cavan , and in 1760 a member of the Irish Privy Council .

His first marriage was on October 11, 1759, Henrietta Cantillon († August 30, 1761). He had two children with her:

  • Lady Henrietta Maxwell († March 6, 1852)
  • John Maxwell, Viscount Maxwell (around 1760 - August 7, 1778)

On December 1, 1771 he married Sarah Cosby (* 1730), widow of the House of Commons Rt. Hon. Arthur Upton († 1768). The marriage remained childless.

On September 10, 1760 he was raised in the Peerage of Ireland to Viscount Farnham , in the County of Cavan, and on May 13, 1763 to the Earl of Farnham , in the County of Cavan.

Since his children had died before him, his Earls and Viscount titles expired on his death in 1779. His baron title fell to his brother Barry Maxwell as 3rd Baron, the 1781 the Viscount and 1785 the Earl titles were newly created.
