Baron Farnham

Baron Farnham , of Farnham in the County of Cavan , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The family seat of the barony is Farnham House near Cavan in County Cavan.

Award and history of the title

The title was created on May 6, 1756 for the lawyer and politician John Maxwell from the Maxwell clan .

His eldest son, the 2nd Baron, was raised to Viscount Farnham on September 10, 1760 and Earl of Farnham on May 13, 1763 , but left no sons, so that the title expired on his death on November 16, 1779. The barony fell to his brother as the 3rd baron. This was raised on January 10, 1781 to Viscount Farnham and on June 22, 1785 to the Earl of Farnham . These two titles expired on the death of his son the 2nd Earl on July 23, 1823; the barony fell to his cousin as the 5th baron.

His great-nephew, 9th Baron, inherited on December 4, 1885 also the subordinate title 11th Baronet , of Calderwood in the County of Lanark, which was bestowed on March 28, 1627 in the Baronage of Nova Scotia to his relative James Maxwell of Calderwood was. The barons have been the head of the Maxwell of Calderwood family line ever since . His son, the 10th Baron, added his family name to Maxwell of Calderwood in 1900 .

Today's title holder has been his great-grandson Simon Maxwell of Calderwood as the 13th Baron since 2001 .
