John Ringrose
John Robert Ringrose (born December 21, 1932 ) is a British mathematician who studies operator algebras.
Ringrose studied at St. John's College, Cambridge University , where he received his doctorate from Frank Smithies in 1957 (Contributions to the theory of linear operators). He was then a lecturer at Newcastle University from 1957 and in Cambridge from 1961, where he also became a Fellow of St. John's College and received the Adams Prize in 1962 . In 1963 he was Senior Lecturer and 1964 Professor in Newcastle, where he stayed until his retirement in 1993.
Ringrose was a leading expert on operator algebras and non-self-adjoint operators. He and Richard Kadison wrote an extensive four-volume monograph on operator algebras.
In 1977 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society and he also became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . 1992 to 1994 he was President of the London Mathematical Society . In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver (Operator algebras and their abelian subalgebras).
