John Rockwell
John Rockwell (born 1940 in Washington, DC ) is an American music critic and author .
Life
He studied at Phillips Academy , Harvard , the University of Munich and the University of California, Berkeley , with a Ph.D. in German-speaking culture. Rockwell began his journalistic career with the Oakland Tribune and the Los Angeles Times . He joined the New York Times in 1972 , first as a critic for classical European music and as a reporter. From 1992 to 1994 he was a correspondent for European culture. From 1994 to 1998 he was director of the Lincoln Center Festival . He then returned to the New York Times and became editor of the weekend supplement. He left the Times in late 2006 to work as a freelancer. Rockwell lives in Manhattan .
In January 2008 John Rockwell was a “Distinguished Visitor” at the American Academy in Berlin . He is currently researching Kurt Weill's “socialist project of opera reform” .
