John F. Sattler

John F. Sattler is a former Lieutenant General in the United States Marine Corps . He was the Director of Strategic Planning and Policies (J-5) on the Joint Staff from September 1, 2006 to July 2008 .

Military career

Sattler graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis in June 1971 and received his officer license as a second lieutenant . He also received a bachelor's degree in economics. After being in the February 1972 Basic School had graduated, he became the second Battalion , 4th Marine Regiment of the 3rd US Marine Division on Okinawa added, and was there as a platoon leader of a rifle platoon used. In 1973 he returned to the United States and served in the Reserve Division at United States Marine Corps Headquarters . In this position he served until 1976 and then went to the Amphibious Warfare School , which he graduated with honors in 1977. He was then transferred back to Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico , where he served as a tactical instructor, staff platoon commander and infantry course instructor .

After teaching at Quantico , Sattler was reassigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th US Marine Regiment, 3rd US Marine Division in Okinawa, where he became an operations officer ( S-3 ). He returned to the United States in 1981 and served as an infantry weapons procurement officer at the U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, DC until 1985. He graduated from the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College in 1986 and then served in the 2nd Battalion, 4th U.S. Marine regiment on Okinawa, but this time as the battalion's executive officer . In 1988, Sattler was assigned the special purpose ground combat element MAGTF 4-88 ( Ground Combat Element for Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force 4-88 ). After serving as a ground operations officer (J-3) for Operation Joint Shield , he spent a year at the US Marine Corps headquarters before going to the Industrial College of Armed Forces (ICAF) at the National Defense University in Washington, DC . He graduated with honors in 1991 and was then employed as a liaison officer in the US House of Representatives . On August 12, 1995, he finally took over command of the 2nd US Marine Regiment and was promoted to Brigadier General two years later when he gave up command on May 29, 1997 , and took over the post of assistant division commander of the 2nd US Marine Division on the same day .

In September 1998, Sattler was transferred to the Joint Staff and took over the post of Deputy Director of Operations and was responsible for the fight against terrorism (J-34). In July 2000 he was transferred to the headquarters of the US Marine Corps and served there as director of the public relations department. A year later, in July 2001, he was appointed commanding general of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune , North Carolina . In November 2002 he was given command of the Combined Joint Task Force , Horn of Africa . Then in August 2003, he assumed the post of director of operations with the US Central Command . On September 12, 2004, Sattler was promoted to Lieutenant General and took command of the I. Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) and on August 3, 2005, finally, of the US Marine Corps Forces Central Command . On July 5, 2006, he was nominated for the post of Director of Strategic Planning and Policies of the Joint Staff and therefore handed over command of the I MEF and the US Marine Corps Forces Central Command to James N. Mattis on August 14, 2006 . On September 1, 2006 he then took up the post of director.

On March 13, 2008, John M. Paxton, Jr. was nominated as Sattler's successor and replaced him after his promotion to Lieutenant General in July 2008. Sattler retired on August 1, 2008.

His awards include a .: the Defense Distinguished Service Medal , the Defense Superior Service Medal , the Legion of Merit with a gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with a gold star, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal .
