John Wesley Saunders III (born April 29, 1950 in Toledo , Ohio - † February 11, 2001 ) was an American American football player. He played for three seasons as the defensive back position in the National Football League (NFL).

Career

Saunders played college football at the University of Toledo for the Toledo Rockets from 1969 to 1971 . He was part of the defense that helped the Rockets win all 35 games for three consecutive seasons. In 1970 and 1971 he also played basketball for the Rockets . Saunders was invited to play in the All-American Bowl after his time in Toledo . 2013 he was honored for his achievements in the Varsity 'T' Hall of Fame , the hall of fame of the Toledo Rockets added.

In the 1972 NFL Draft, Saunders was selected in the fourth round as the 87th player by the Los Angeles Rams . However, he did not play a game for the Rams. In 1972 he played two games for the Buffalo Bills instead . In 1973 he moved to the Canadian Football League (CFL), where he played one season for the Edmonton Eskimos . In the following two years he played for the San Francisco 49ers , where he played seven games.
