John Warren Shipley, Baron Shipley OBE (born July 5, 1946 in Whitby , North Yorkshire ) is a British politician of the Liberal Party and now the Liberal Democrats , who ran five unsuccessfully for a member of the House of Commons and has been a life peer since 2010 Is a member of the House of Lords .

Life

Professional career and unsuccessful lower house candidates

Shipley, who began his professional career at Procter & Gamble from 1969 to 1971, was with The Open University from 1971 to 2005, where he was most recently Regional Director for the North and the European Union from 1997 to 2005 .

In the mid-1970s he began his political career in the Liberal Party and ran for this in the general election on February 28, 1974 and October 10, 1974 in the constituency of Blyth, each unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons and was defeated by both.

In the general election on May 3, 1979 , he applied again unsuccessfully for a seat in the constituency of Hexham . His two candidacies in the Newcastle North constituency in the elections on June 9, 1983 and June 11, 1987 were unsuccessful.

Local politician and member of the House of Lords

In 1975, he was the first time for a member of the city council of Newcastle upon Tyne elected and was this for 37 years by 2012. Later, Shipley, who was a member of the Northumberland Police Department in the 1980s, was opposition leader on Newcastle upon Tyne City Council from 1988 to 1998 . In 1995 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire for his services . In the 1990s he was also a member of the passenger transport administration of Tyne and Wear for the first time and held this position again from 2004 to 2006. At the same time he was a member of the board of the operating company for Newcastle Airport from 2004 to 2006 and from 2005 to 2012 also a board member of for the region North East England responsible regional development agency One North East . Between 2006 and 2010 he was also the majority leader in the Newcastle upon Tyne City Council.

By a letters patent dated July 14, 2010 Shipley was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Shipley , of Gosforth in the County of Tyne and Wear .
