John Simon, 2nd Viscount Simon
John Gilbert Simon, 2nd Viscount Simon GSCI GCVO OBE PC , (born September 2, 1902 in Guildford , Surrey , † December 5, 1993 ) was a British peer and politician .
life and career
Simon was born in Guildford on September 2, 1902, the son of John Allsebrook Simon, 1st Viscount Simon and his wife Ethel Mary Venables, who died shortly afterwards.
He later became Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Port of London Authority .
Membership in the House of Lords
After the death of his father in 1954, Simon inherited his title as Viscount Simon and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He gave his inaugural address on March 11, 1958, on the Water Bill . In addition, at the end of the 1950s he spoke to the merchant navy and the British railways.
He regularly took part in debates in the House of Lords.
In the 1960s, he spoke out on the shipping industry, higher education and the reorganization of the ports. Simon spoke in the 1970s about the UK's relationship with the then EC , drafts for the Northern Irish Constitution and alternative energy resources, and structural weaknesses in rural areas.
In the 1980s, he spoke on Defense Policy, the National Heritage Bill , the Police and Criminal Evidence Bill, and the Merchant Shipping Bill . He last spoke up on July 20, 1988, at the age of almost 86.
Family and death
He married on December 22, 1930 Maud Christie Hunt († February 6, 2000), the daughter of William Stanley Hunt. They had two children together, a son and a daughter.
Simon died on December 5, 1993 at the age of 91. His daughter Gemma Louise Simon died the following year. His son inherited his title as David Simon, 3rd Viscount Simon .
