John Speccot (politician, around 1641)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Speccot (* around 1641; † before January 10, 1678 ) was an English politician who was once elected as a member of the House of Commons .

origin

John Speccot came from the Speccot family (also Speccott ), a gentry family with estates in Cornwall and Devon . He was the only son of Paul Speccott from his second marriage to Dorothy Wise. His father died in 1644, so that he became his father's heir. His mother remarried in 1647. From December 3, 1657 Speccott studied at Christ Church College , Oxford .

Political activity

Speccot's father had supported the King at the start of the English Civil War , and after the Stuart Restoration , Speccot became Justice of the Peace for Cornwall in July 1660 . Officially still a minor, he now took over his inheritance, which included Penheale Manor near Newport and other properties in south-west England. Presumably still a minor, he was elected MP for Newport in the 1661 general election. In the so-called Cavalier Parliament , which met with interruptions until 1679, he was only a member of a few committees. As a moderate Presbyterian , he apparently joined the opposition to the government, which is why he lost his office as justice of the peace in 1670. He was born on 10 January 1678 at the nearby of Penheale Egloskerry buried.

family

After February 15, 1562 Speccott had married Honor Eliot , a daughter of John Eliot of St Germans . With her he had three sons and a daughter:

  • John Speccot (1665-1705)
  • Elizabeth Speccott ∞ Richard Long

His heir became his eldest son, John.
