John Stumar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Stuart Stumar (born May 30, 1892 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † October 27, 1962 in Los Angeles , United States ) was a Hungarian-born, American cameraman of mostly B-films.

Live and act

Charles Stumar's brother, two years younger than him, came to the United States as a child, where he began to learn his trade around 1910. After years as a camera assistant during the First World War, John Stumar was employed as head cameraman for the first time in 1917 by the production company Thomas H. Inces and initially photographed several anti-German and pro-French propaganda films such as The Kaiser's Shadow and Viva la France . Even the later B-films photographed by Stumars were rarely of above-average quality.

John S. Stumar photographed westerns and melodramas, comedies and dramas, and above-average productions such as The Scream of the Crowd , which he photographed as Sid Hickox's junior partner , remained the exception. Most recently, John Stumar had to be content with short film photography; his career ended immediately after the end of World War II. His last film work took him to Central America. What Stumar did professionally after 1946 is not known.
