John Sykes (born November 2, 1950 in Huddersfield ) is a retired English football player .

Career

Sykes came in 1967 at the age of 16 from nearby Almondbury as an apprentice (German apprentice) to the fourth division Bradford Park Avenue . After he had scored a hat trick in a youth game, he gave the following weekend in early September 1968 under coach Jack Rowley in a 1-1 draw against Grimsby Town his competitive debut, but had to be replaced injured in the course of the game. At that time he was also noticed by the coach of Welsh league rivals AFC Wrexham , John Neal , at a youth game between Stockport County and Bradford, but initially unsuccessfully tried to get a signing, Bradford called a transfer fee of £ 6000 in December 1968 on. In the meantime, Sykes had signed his first professional contract in November 1968, but he did not get to another competitive appearance for the Bradford first team.

In early January 1969, the two clubs finally agreed on an exchange deal. Former England international Ray Charnley and Sykes switched employers. He made his first appearance for Wrexham on the last game day of the 1968/69 season, without any sporting significance , and the 1-0 win against AFC Workington was also his last appearance in the Football League . After he was regularly used in the reserve team in the 1969/70 season and had won the Northern Floodlit League Cup and the Alves Cup with the team , his contract was not extended beyond the end of the season. In March 1971 Sykes emigrated to Australia .
