John Tinsley

Ernest John Tinsley (born March 22, 1919 , † July 20, 1992 in Oxford ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Bristol from 1976 to 1985.

life and career

Tinsley was born to a family of farmers and attended the University of Durham . Later he was at Hill University as a lecturer , where he expanded the field of theology.

After his ordination in 1943, he was appointed curate of the Durham and Westoe parishes . He then became a professor at the University of Leeds from 1961 to 1975 .

Tinsley left the university in 1976. He was named Bishop of Bristol and held that office until 1985. He then wrote books and was a lecturer at various universities.

Tinsley was a Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords from 1982 to 1985 .

He was married to Marjorie Dixon and had two daughters.
