John Troup Shewmake

John Troup Shewmake (born January 23, 1828 in Burke County , Georgia , † December 1, 1898 in Augusta , Georgia) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

John Troup Shewmake, son of Anna Lassister and Joseph Shewmake (1779-1838), a plantation owner , was born in 1828 in Burke County. His father was a slave owner who owned 29 slaves in 1830  . His brother, Joseph Allen Shewmake (1816-1889), owned 23 slaves in 1840, which he probably inherited from their father. In 1850 there were already 33 slaves. The Shewmakes operated their own iron smelting near Alexander (Burke County).

Nothing is known about the youth of John Troup Shewmake. At one point he studied law and began practicing as a lawyer after receiving his license. On December 18, 1850, he married Penelope Elizabeth Jones (1831-1901), the youngest daughter of Henry Philip Jones from Birdsville ( Jenkins County ). The couple had eight children: Lena, Troup, William, Anne Virginia (1854–1927), Marshall Augustus (* 1855), Burke (* 1859), Henry Philip (* 1864) and Claude (* 1866). Shewmake also served as judge at some point. He served in the Georgia Senate in 1861 and 1879 . During the Civil War , he served in the Second Confederate Congress from 1864 to 1865 . He probably resumed his work as a lawyer after the end of the war. He died in Augusta, Richmond County, and was buried there in Magnolia Cemetery .
