John W. Lane ( February 23, 1835 - September 16, 1888 ) was a Texan politician .

Career

Lane was originally from Kentucky . Trained as a printer, he came to Dallas in 1859 , where he found employment with the Dallas Herald newspaper and later became its co-editor. In 1860 he married Elizabeth Crutchfield and the following year he joined the 18th Texan Cavalry, in whose ranks he fought in the American Civil War.

Upon his return home, Lane was elected mayor of Dallas in 1866. He resigned on September 4 of the same year to become the personal secretary of Governor James W. Throckmorton . From 1869 to 1872 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives . There he campaigned for a law in 1871 that ensured the connection of Dallas to the rail network of the Texas and Pacific Railroad .

He was a member of Tannehill Lodge No. 52 AF & AM . His grave is in the Masonic Section of Pioneer Cemetery in central Dallas.
