John W. Lord

John Whitaker Lord Jr. (born December 19, 1901 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  May 16, 1972 ) was an American lawyer and politician . After his appeal by President Dwight D. Eisenhower , he served as a federal judge in the federal district court for the eastern district of Pennsylvania from 1954 to 1971 .

Career

After his graduation from the visiting German Town native John Lord to 1928, the Temple University in his hometown of Philadelphia and graduated from the local School of Law the Bachelor of Laws . He then practiced as a lawyer in Philadelphia until 1954. From 1938 to 1954 he was himself a law professor at Temple University; During this time he also served as Assistant Attorney General of Pennsylvania from 1939 to 1946 . He then sat from 1947 to 1951 as a Republican in the Pennsylvania Senate . From 1952 to 1954 he was a member of the Philadelphia City Council .

On March 29, 1954, Lord was appointed Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania by President Eisenhower to succeed James P. McGranery . After confirmation by the US Senate on May 18 of the same year, he was able to take office two days later. On December 19, 1971, he switched to senior status and thus effectively retired. His seat fell to Louis Charles Bechtle . He died on May 16, 1972 and was buried in the Saint Timothys Episcopal Church Cemetery in Roxborough .
