John Walker (painter)

John Walker (born November 23, 1939 in Birmingham ) is an English painter and printmaker .

John Walker studied in Birmingham. Some of his early works were inspired by abstract expressionism and often combined three-dimensional forms with "flatter" elements. These works were mostly done in acrylic paints .

In the early 1970s, John Walker produced a series of large-format blackboard paintings, the Blackboard Pieces in blackboard chalk and the Juggernaut (truck driver) works in which he used pigment colors . From the late 1970s onwards, his work alludes to earlier painters such as Francisco de Goya , Édouard Manet, and Henri Matisse , either by quoting the motif or by using a particular painting technique. During this time he began to use oil paints more often .

After spending some time in Australia , John Walker was appointed Dean of the School of Art at Victoria College of the Arts in Melbourne . This is where his Oceania series was created in which he brought elements of oceanic art.

John Walker currently works as a professor of painting in the visual arts department of the art school at Boston University in Boston , MA .

John Walker was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1985.
