John Woolf

Sir John Woolf (born March 15, 1913 in London , † June 28, 1999 ibid) was a British film producer who was awarded the Oscar in the category Best Picture in 1969 for the film Oliver .

Life

Woolfs received his education from Eton College and the Institut Montana in Switzerland .

Woolf's father, CM Woolf, had already worked as a film producer in the British film industry. This founded General Film Distributors, in which John Woolf also participated. During World War II , Woolf served in the Army and was awarded the US Bronze Star.

Together with his younger brother James Woolf , he founded the film production company Romulus Films in 1948. Anglia Television was founded in 1958. After his brother's death in 1967, Woolfs continued to work as the sole producer. In 1983 he retired as Managing Director of Anglia Television, and in 1988 he finally retired.

The 1959 film The Way Up brought Woolf and his brother the first Oscar nomination. In 1969 Woolf was awarded this for Oliver .

In 1975 Woolfs was made a knight .

Woolf has been married three times.
