Johnny Rodriguez
Johnny Rodriguez (* 10. December 1951 in Sabinal, Texas as Juan Raoul Davis Rodriguez ) is an American country singer.
Childhood and youth
Johnny grew up with eight siblings near the Mexican border. At the age of seven, his brother Andres gave him a guitar. It was through Andres that he first came into contact with country music. At 16 he founded his own band.
He was sentenced to prison several times for minor offenses. A law enforcement officer who heard him sing recognized his talent and found him a job at the Alamo Village amusement park in 1970. Johnny took on a number of jobs on western shows. He also entertained tourists as a singer. In 1971 Tom T. Hall visited the amusement park and became aware of the handsome young talent. With an invitation from the big star and a few dollars in his pocket, Rodriguez made his way to Nashville a few months later .
Career
First he found in the band Tom T. Halls inclusion. Hall also gave him a contract with Mercury Records and composed songs for his first records. Jerry Kennedy became his producer for all of the Mercury recordings. His debut single, Pass Me By , was already in the top 10. A year later, three number 1 hits followed. He was named the Most Promising Young Singer of 1972 by the Academy of Country Music . His streak of success with several other top hits initially lasted until the early eighties. Then drug problems ushered in a gradual decline. In 1984 he overcame his addiction and tried a fresh start. After a short time he was back in the charts. He was able to hold up for a few years before becoming addicted to cocaine again. His marriage failed. A few years passed before he made another comeback in 1993.
On August 29, 1998, a tragic incident occurred in his home: he accidentally shot and killed a friend he believed was a burglar. The Texas court found self-defense and acquitted him.
