Jonah Metzger ( Hebrew יונה מצגר, also transcribed by Yona Metzger ; *  August 4, 1953 in Haifa ) was Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi in Israel from 2003 to 2013 . He is considered to be national religious - Orthodox .

Life

Metzger was a soldier in the Israeli army and fought in several wars. He left the army as a military rabbi with the rank of captain .

Then Metzger studied at the Kerem Be-Yavne Hesder - Yeshiva and taught at a yeshiva and at schools at the same time. He took over the position of rabbi at the Tifferet Zvi Synagogue in Tel Aviv and was later responsible for all of northern Tel Aviv. He published several books.

In January 2008, Metzger gave an interview to the Haaretz in which he campaigned for the Palestinians to be driven into the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula . Jerusalem would belong to the Jews and the Muslims would have no relation to it. Metzger has been criticized by moderate Israelis and the Arab world.

In August 2012 he traveled to Germany to meet with representatives of the federal government about a future law on Brit Mila . He then explained his position before the federal press conference . This solidarity visit was not announced and met resistance from the Central Council of Jews in Germany .

Due to allegations of corruption, which he denies, he suspended himself from his post as Chief Rabbi in June 2013. On 18 November 2013 he was in custody taken. In addition to accepting bribes amounting to several million shekels , the list of offenses he is charged with includes violations of the law such as money laundering , obstruction of an investigation, fraud and others. The police suspect Metzger of accepting bribes from non-profit organizations and promoting their interests in return.

David Lau was elected as the successor to the office of Chief Rabbi of the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbis in Israel in July 2013 .
