Jonas Černius

Jonas Černius (born January 6, 1898 in Kupiškis ; † July 3, 1977 in Los Angeles , USA ) was an officer and in 1939 briefly Lithuanian Prime Minister.

Life

He graduated from the elementary school in Kupiškis and the Panevėžys grammar school .

After Lithuania declared independence, he volunteered for the army in 1919. He then studied at the Military School in Lithuania, in 1929 he graduated from the College of Military Engineering in Brussels and in 1932 the Military Academy in Paris . From 1935 to 1939 he was chief of the general staff with the rank of brigadier general .

Jonas Černius was Prime Minister of Lithuania from March 27 to November 21, 1939.

From 1940 to 1941 he served in the Red Army , into which parts of the Lithuanian Army had been integrated after the occupation of Lithuania, with the rank of major general .

With the withdrawing Wehrmacht , he fled first to Germany, then to England. In 1948 he emigrated to the USA and worked as an engineer at General Motors .
