Antanas Merkys ( listen ? / I ) (born February 1, 1887 in Bajorai near Skapiškis , Kupiškis Rajongemeinde ; † March 5, 1955 in Malenki, Vladimir Oblast ) was a Lithuanian lawyer and politician , Prime Minister and President of Lithuania . Audio file / audio sample

Life

Merkys graduated from high school in Riga (Latvia) and then studied law at the University of Tartu (Estonia). He was mobilized during the First World War. In 1918 Merkys graduated from the University of Kiev with a law degree . From 1934 to 1939 he was mayor of Kaunas . On June 15, 1940, Merkys received the presidency from Antanas Smetona before he fled to Germany. He exercised it during the occupation until June 17, 1940, when he had to resign under Soviet pressure. Merkys tried to flee to Sweden , but was arrested by the NKVD in Riga airport and deported with his family to Siberia on July 17, 1940 . In 1952 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Vladimir Prison. In 1955 Merkys died in the handicapped house in the village of Malenki in Vladimir Oblast.
