Jonathan Krause
Jonathan Krause (born April 5, 1701 in Hirschberg , † December 13, 1762 in Liegnitz ) was a German Protestant theologian and poet of hymns.
Live and act
Krause attended the Elisabeth-Gymnasium in Breslau in 1716 , began studying at the University of Leipzig in 1718 , switched to the University of Wittenberg in 1723 , where he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. After he had held various positions as private tutor, he was ordained a deacon in Probsthain (today Proboszczów ) on August 20, 1732 in Liegnitz . In 1739 he became pastor in Liegnitz, in 1741 he became superintendent and member of the consistory , which he remained until the end of his life.
Krause had composed a number of sacred songs which were widely distributed. The first collection of his songs appeared in Hamburg in 1732 under the title "The praised God of the open lips of the believer in holy songs about the orderly Sunday and feast day Evangelia" . In his second collection, in addition to the Gospels, there were also epistles . It appeared in Lauban in 1739 under the title “God's grace and truth in Christ Jesus” . In the second collection you can find his song “Hallelujah, beautiful morning, more beautiful than you might think” , which has also found its way into more recent hymn books.
