The Jonental extends from Kappel am Albis in the canton of Zurich in a north-westerly direction along the Aeugsterberg to Jonen in the canton of Aargau . It lies between the Reppisch Valley and the Reuss Valley . The Jonen or Jonenbach flows through the Jonental, which flows into the Reuss at Jonen . The settlements on the Jonenbach and their neighboring villages are generally understood as the Jonental.

In the upper Jonental are the villages of Kappel am Albis, Hausen am Albis , Rifferswil , Herferswil, Wängi , Affoltern am Albis and in the lower Zwillikon and Jonen .

history

In the lower Jonental is the Jonental pilgrimage chapel , first mentioned in 1521 , which is considered the most important Marian pilgrimage site in the canton of Aargau. The chapel was built in the baroque style in 1735 . About 1 km north of the chapel, in the "Schalchmatthau" area of the municipality of Oberlunkhofen, are the preserved ruins of the bathing wing of a Roman villa from the 1st century. Immediately adjacent were graves of the Alemanni from the 7th century.

Although only small village streams flow into the Jonenbach, extensive flood protection measures had to be taken after several floods on the Jonenbach . In 2008 a retention basin was built in the Jonental near Affoltern am Albis .

To build the retention basin, the road had to be relocated in the direction of Rifferswil and part of the construction playground had to be redesigned.
