The Aeugsterberg (also Äugsterberg ) is 829  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Swiss canton of Zurich . It is located north of Aeugst am Albis, west of the Türlersee .

The Aeugsterberg arose from the material from the Hörnli fill. The rock series of this Upper Freshwater Molasse consists mainly of various marls, sandstones and limestones. During the last Ice Age , the Aeugsterberg rose like an island out of the ice masses formed by the Reuss and Linth glaciers .

After the glacier melted, the pressure on the mountain flank eased, while the meltwater streams increased the erosion at the foot of the mountain. About 10,000 years ago, the slope lost its stability and caused 75 million cubic meters of rock to plunge into the Reppisch Valley from the north side of the ridge . The dammed Reppisch created the Türlersee , which initially flowed over the Hexengraben towards the Reuss until the Reppisch was able to dig a new bed through the sack and flow back into the Limmat .

In 1786 a coal seam was discovered north of the Aeugsterberg near Gottert , which led to the construction of the Riedhof mine , in which coal was mined during the periods 1786–1814, 1917–1921 and 1942–1947.
