The Joods Historisch Museum (German: Jewish historical museum ) is a museum in Amsterdam about the history of Judaism in Amsterdam. Since 1987 the museum has been located on Jonas Daniël Meijerplein, in the heart of the former Jewish quarter. With the Portuguese Synagogue , the National Holocaust Museum and the Hollandschen Schouwburg , the four museums form the “ Joods Cultureel Kwartier ”.

The building

Since May 3, 1987, the museum has been located in a complex of the four former Ashkenazi synagogues. After World War II , the synagogues near the Waterlooplein and the Weesperstraat were no longer used for their religious purposes.

history

Before its current location, the museum was housed in the medieval De Waag building (city scales on the Nieuwmarkt near Sint Antoniespoort ). This forerunner institution before the Second World War was called the Stichting Joods Historisch Museum. It was opened on February 24, 1932. During the German occupation it was closed and a large part of the collection was stolen. Part of it could be returned. After its reopening in 1955, the persecution and murder of the Jewish Dutch and the German and Austrian Jews who fled here became an important aspect of the museum's work.
