Jordi Hereu i Boher [ ˈʒoɾdi əˈɾɛu i buˈɛ ] (born June 14, 1965 in Barcelona ) is a Catalan politician and from 2006 to 2011 mayor of Barcelona. He is a member of the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC), the Catalan national association of Spanish socialists .

Career

Jordi Hereu studied business administration and obtained a Master of Business Administration from the private university ESADE in Barcelona. From 1991 to 1997 he worked in the private sector, in 1997 he joined the administration of the Barcelona district of Les Corts in a leading position . In this district he took over the office of regidor in 1999 , which roughly corresponds to a district mayor or district office manager in major German cities. After the end of his tenure, he moved to the same position in the district of Sant Andreu de Palomar in 2003 , while he was also responsible for security and mobility in the city administration. In April 2006 he gave up these offices to become the fifth deputy mayor of Barcelona with the business areas of mobility, civic participation, solidarity and cooperation, as well as functions as head of the municipal information commission, chairman of the district assembly in Gracia and as spokesman for the socialist faction in the city council .

Following the resignation of the previous incumbent, Joan Clos , who was appointed Spanish Minister of Industry, the Barcelona City Council elected Hereu as the new mayor with an absolute majority on September 8, 2006.
