Jorge Brovetto

Jorge Brovetto (born February 14, 1933 in Montevideo - † June 8, 2019 ) was a Uruguayan politician .

Life

Brovetto graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry at the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) with a specialization in biochemistry in 1964. He then went on to study at the Istituto Superiore di Sanitá and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome in 1965. From 1968 to 1970 he worked in the USA in the Hormone Research Laboratory and also continued his education at the University of California . From 1986 to 1989 he was first deputy rector of the UdelaR, where he worked as a professor of biochemistry in the chemistry and medicine departments, before finally taking over the rector's office in 1989, which he led until 1998. Between 1985 and 1989 Brovetto was a member of the Asamblea General del Claustro . He was a founding member and executive secretary of the Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo (AUGM). Brovetto was Minister of Education from March 1, 2005 to March 3, 2008, when he was replaced by María Simón . From June 20, 2004 he was initially Vice-President and with the election of Tabaré Vazquez 'as President of Uruguay, he finally became President of the Frente Amplio .

Brovetto published several scientific papers. He was also co-author of books published or edited in the United States, the Netherlands, Italy and Latin America. He was also a member of the Consejo nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICYT) and the Programa de Desarrollo de las Ciencias Básicas (PEDECIBA).
