Jorge Díaz Gutiérrez (born February 20, 1930 in Rosario , Santa Fe, Argentina, † March 13, 2007 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean-Spanish playwright.

Life

Díaz was born in Argentina to Spanish parents. When he was three years old, the family moved to Chile, where he lived until the mid-1960s.

He began his career as a member of the Chilean experimental theater group Ictus, for which he initially worked as a set designer. In 1959 he played as an actor in a production of Ionesco's play The Bald Singer , a key work of the absurd theater . As a result, he wrote pieces that can be assigned to the theater of the absurd.

His most played works El cepillo de Dientes (The Toothbrush) and El velero en la botella (The sailing ship in a bottle) revolve around problems of interpersonal communication. Other important themes in his work are respect, ecology and solidarity.

In the mid-1960s, Díaz moved to Spain, where he lived for about thirty years before returning to Chile in 1994. He died of esophageal cancer in Chile in 2007 .

With over a hundred stage works for adults and children, Díaz is one of the best-known authors of the " Generación del 50 ", the generation of Spanish-speaking writers born around 1920–1930 who made public appearances in the 1950s.
