José Benito de Churriguera (born March 21, 1665 in Madrid ; † March 2, 1725 there ) was a Spanish sculptor , carver and builder of the late Baroque era.

biography

Probably following his father's tradition of sculpting and carving, he was initially active in this profession. Influenced by Gian Lorenzo Bernini , Francesco Borromini and Guarino Guarini , he created altarpieces for some churches in Madrid , Salamanca and for the Capilla del Sagrario (or Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento ) in the Cathedral of Segovia . He turned to architecture only in 1709 when he developed designs for the small town of Nuevo Baztán ( Autonomous Community of Madrid ), which is considered to be the most generous urban planning in Spain at the time. He designed and built the palace, the church and the manufacture of the place. In the years 1722/23 he designed the town hall of Salamanca.

Together with his two younger brothers Joaquín de Churriguera (1674–1724) and Alberto de Churriguera (1686–1750), both architects and sculptors, he shaped the exuberant style of the Spanish late baroque, which included some new forms such as twisted columns or inverted obelisks pilasters brought forth. This style went down in the history of architecture and art under the name of Churriguerism .

brothers

  • Joaquín de Churriguera built the Colegio de Anaya and the Colegio de Calatrava in Salamanca , among others .
  • Alberto de Churriguera, who possessed the greatest talent of the three brothers, emerged as an independent architect only after the death of his two older brothers. He planned and built the Plaza Mayor (beg. 1729) and the Iglesia de San Sebastián (beg. 1731) in Salamanca. Although he had become the leading architect (maestro mayor) of the city, he left Salamanca in 1738. His last work was the parish church of Santo Tomás Apóstol in Orgaz (from 1738).
