José Eduvigis Díaz

José Eduvigis Díaz (born October 17, 1833 near Cerro Verá , Paraguay , † February 7, 1867 in Paraguay) was a Paraguayan general in the Triple Alliance War , which the country waged against Brazil , Argentina and Uruguay . He is considered a hero of Paraguay because of the victorious battle of Curupaytí .

biography

Díaz joined the army in 1852 and rose to the rank of police chief in Asunción .

In the Triple Alliance War that began in 1864, Díaz fought on the side of Paraguay and won a prestigious victory for his homeland in the Battle of Curupaytí .

A short time later, in January 1867, he was seriously wounded by a grenade while on a fishing trip on the Paraguay River . As a result, one of his legs had to be amputated; nevertheless, Díaz died a few days later.
