Francisco José Tenreiro

Francisco José Tenreiro de Vasques (born January 20, 1921 on the island of São Tomé , São Tomé and Príncipe ; † December 31, 1963 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was a Sao-Toméic geographer , poet, essayist and politician. He was one of the most important São Tomés and Principes poets at all.

Life

Tenreiro was born the son of a Portuguese and an African woman on the island of São Tomé, which at that time was still a Portuguese colony. He saw himself as a Sãotomean throughout his life, although he spent most of his life in Portugal.

He studied geography, first at the Escola Superior de Administração Colonial in Lisbon, later he continued his studies in London . After completing his studies, he first worked as a geographer at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Política Ultramarina in Lisbon and received his doctorate in 1961 from the Philosophy Faculty of the University of Lisbon, then worked until his death as a lecturer in literature at the university of the same name.

As a member of the Portuguese Parliament, he was the representative and commissioner for São Tomé and Principe of the Parliament.

The poet died in Lisbon on December 31, 1963 at the age of 42.

Tenreiro's work

Tenreiro wrote exclusively in Portuguese . He has published essays on political and social issues in various journals and magazines. The main topics included the suffering of blacks during colonialism and the problems of the black diaspora in Portugal and the black population worldwide. With his poetry he wanted to establish a kind of " Novo Africa ", a new Africa of culture and literature. He also dealt with the problem of blacks in the USA of his time, as shown in the poem " Fragmento de Blues ", dedicated to Langston Hughes , as well as a volume of poetry by Afro-American poets that he put together. His most famous poem is " Negro de todo o mundo ".
