José Julio Gomes Gonçalves (born September 17, 1985 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese football player who also has Swiss citizenship .

Career

Born in Portugal, Gonçalves grew up in Switzerland and learned to play football at La Sallaz (Lausanne), Yverdon and FC Basel . From Basel's youth, he moved to FC Winterthur in 2004 , where he played for half a year in the second division team and was then loaned to Italy's AC Venice in Serie B for the second half of the season . After relegation and bankruptcy of the Venetians, he returned to Switzerland and joined FC Thun .

FC Thun took part in the Champions League qualification as Swiss runner-up in the 2005/06 season and reached the group stage. Gonçalves was not only a regular player in the league at the club, but was also used ten times in international games. As a result, at the age of 20, he also recommended himself abroad and he received an offer from Heart of Midlothian , whereupon he left Thun after only six months.

With the Scots, the defender was used four times in the remaining games of the season and the playoffs and was able to celebrate the runner-up in the Scottish Premier League with the club and won the national cup. Nevertheless, it was not until the 2007/08 season that he was able to assert himself with the Midlothians and made 23 appearances this season plus six cup games.

Before the 2008/09 season Gonçalves was awarded to the German second division club 1. FC Nürnberg . In the first half of the season he was one of the regular players in central defense until the season turned out to be unfortunate for him. An own goal in the game at St. Pauli, which the team could no longer equalize, was followed by a dismissal shortly after half-time on the twelfth matchday, after which only a 0-0 draw against the then bottom-of-the-table FSV Frankfurt came out for the team. This red card led to the replacement of the young player Dominic Maroh , who became a regular player straight away. Gonçalves made a late substitution on Matchday 15 and when he was back in the starting line-up on the last day of the first half of the season, he had to be replaced after just six minutes after a tendon torn. In the second half of the season he was unable to return to the team, which had been strengthened by newcomers, due to another injury. Nevertheless, he was one of the most successful defense in the second division over the whole season. In mid-May 2009 it was announced that the FCN will not exercise the purchase option for Gonçalves and that he will return to Heart of Midlothian at the end of the season, where he still had a contract until 2010. From January 16, 2011 he was under contract with FC St. Gallen . Due to the relegation, he moved to FC Sion in July 2011 and stayed there until the end of 2012.

In 2013 he moved to Major League Soccer for the New England Revolution .

National team

José Gonçalves is both a Portuguese and a Swiss citizen. Although he grew up and lived in Switzerland, he decided to play for the Portuguese Association when he was young. It was not until March 2006 that he became a Swiss citizen. Among other things, he took part with the Portuguese U-21 at the 2007 Junior World Championships in the Netherlands.
