José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi (born November 15, 1776 in Mexico City , then New Spain ; died June 21, 1827 there ) was a Mexican writer and journalist. He is best known as the author of the novel El Periquillo Sarniento , which appeared during the Mexican War of Independence and is considered the first novel in Latin America . The work forms the first volume of the well-known multi-volume Spanish-language book series Sepan Cuantos by the Mexican publisher Librería Porrúa . His work La Quijotita y su prima was also included in this series (volume 71).
