José López Domínguez (1897)

José López Domínguez (born November 29, 1829 in Marbella , † October 17, 1911 in Madrid ) was a Spanish general and prime minister .

López Domínguez initially belonged to the unionist party, which, under Serrano , Topete and Prim , was instrumental in the overthrow of Queen Isabella in September 1868 .

In the uprising that had developed in the summer of 1873 with a focus on Cartagena and in which a federal reorganization of Spain was fought at the district level, López Domínguez took over the supreme command of the siege army on December 11, 1873. He arranged for larger siege guns to be brought in and carried out the bombardment of Cartagena with the greatest vigor, so that the revolutionary junta under General Contreras fled on December 29 on board their ironclad Numancia . After taking Fort Atalaya on January 11, 1874, the city surrendered on January 12.

The government appointed López Domínguez lieutenant general as a reward for these successes. With part of his army he moved north and fought in the following months under Serrano and Concha against the Carlist in the Basque provinces.

After this time he was one of the political leaders of the Liberals, or more precisely, the Fusionists under Sagasta , who became the Liberal Party during the Restoration .

In the Posada Herrera government , López Domínguez took over the war ministry in October 1883, but resigned in January 1884. Under his political leader Sagasta, he again held the Ministry of War from 1892 to 1895. He later became President of the Senate of the Spanish Cortes and on June 6, 1906, he assumed the post of Prime Minister for four months. He resigned after a short time due to internal party differences, his predecessor Segismundo Moret became his provisional successor.
