Don José Gutiérrez de la Concha y Irigoyen (born June 4, 1809 in Córdoba de Tucumán , today's Argentina , † November 5, 1895 in Madrid ) was a Spanish general and from 1857 Marquis of Havana .

He served first in America, then in the war against the Carlist . After the Treaty of Vergara in 1839 he became lieutenant general , was captain general of the Basque provinces from 1843 to 1846 , in this position suppressed the rising of Santiago and was then appointed supreme chief of the Spanish cavalry.

In 1849 he became captain general of the island of Cuba , but as a result of the incursion of the troops, independence- oriented adventurer Narciso López was recalled in 1852 and replaced by General Valentín Cañedo Miranda . This led him into the ranks of the opposition. Exiled to Mallorca in 1853 , like his brother Manuel, he fled to France and was interned in Bordeaux .

The revolution of 1854 brought him back to Spain and restored him to the post of Captain General of Cuba, which he held until 1859. He then took an eager part in the meetings of the Senate and made himself known as a parliamentary speaker. In July 1862 he took over the legation post in Paris in place of Alejandro Món , but resigned from the same in December because he believed himself exposed by the appearance of General Prim in Mexico , went to Madrid and opposed the Ministry's Mexican policy in the Senate .

In March 1863 he joined the cabinet of the Marqués de Miraflores as Minister of War , held the newly created Ultramar Ministry on an interim basis and became President of the Senate in December 1864. At the outbreak of the September Revolution in 1868, after the resignation of Luis González Bravo , he was head of the Spanish government for twelve days (from September 18 to 29), but he was unable to save the throne of Isabellas II .

During the reign of Amadeus of Savoy and the First Republic , he joined the Alfonso Party and was again Captain General of Cuba from April 1874 to May 1875. He then retired from public life, but was appointed President of the Senate in 1882 and in 1883 as Commander of the Northern Army of Spain. In 1886 Gutiérrez de la Concha was re-elected President of the Spanish Senate.

José Gutiérrez de la Concha died in Madrid on November 5, 1895.
