José María Pons Irazazábal

José María Pons Irazazábal (* 12. April 1948 in Palma ) is a Spanish jurist and diplomat in retirement .

He graduated in law in 1974. In the same year he entered the diplomatic service and worked at the embassies in Warsaw and Bern. Since June 1985 he worked as a lecturer council responsible for relations with the EU in the government cabinet of Felipe González . In July 1989 he was appointed office manager of Enrique Barón Crespo , President of the European Parliament . From April 1991 he headed the international department in Felipe Gonzalez's government cabinet .

On August 5, 1995, he was appointed Spanish Ambassador to the Netherlands. On February 2, 2001 he became ambassador to Denmark, and from April 2001 he was also responsible for the Republic of Lithuania. From 2004 to 2008 he headed the Europe and North America Department at the Foreign Ministry . In July 2005 he was promoted to plenipotentiary second class ambassador. From June 27, 2008 to July 27, 2010 he was ambassador to Vienna .
