José María de Pereda

José María de Pereda y Sanchez de Porrua (born February 6, 1833 in Polanco near Santander , Cantabria , Spain , † March 1, 1906 in Santander) was a Spanish writer .

He came from the large family of a farmer who moved to Santander to give their son a better education. In 1852 he went to Madrid and witnessed the revolution of 1854. In 1855 he returned to Santander.

The background of his realistic novels in the style of Costumbrismo are his homeland Santander and Cantabria and the contrast between town and country. Politically close to the Carlist , he nostalgically glorified the patriarchal living conditions in the country. He also conducted language studies and typed the various dialects of Cantabria.
