José María Mendiluce Pereiro

José María Mendiluce Pereiro (born April 14, 1951 in Madrid , † November 28, 2015 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish author and politician of the Confederación de Los Verdes .

Life

Mendiluce studied economics and political science at the Complutense University of Madrid . He took part in student movements against the Franco dictatorship and was a member of the Liga Comunista Revolucionaria in those years . Later in life, Mendiluce was a member of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español and the Confederación de Los Verdes. From 1980 he was a member of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and worked in countries such as Namibia and Angola. From 1994 to 2004 Mendiluce was a member of the European Parliament . From July 19, 1994 to July 19, 2004 he was a member of the parliamentary group of the Party of European Socialists in the European Parliament . As a candidate for the Spanish Greens, he ran for the office of mayor in Madrid in 2003 and publicly came out as homosexual.

As an author, he wrote several works in his life. In 1996 he won the Creu de Sant Jordi Prize . He died of cancer in November 2015 at the age of 64.
