José Rodrigues Leite e Oiticica

José Rodrigues Leite e Oiticica (born July 22, 1882 in Oliveira , Minas Gerais , † June 30, 1957 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian poet , anarchist , Romanist and Lusitanist .

life and work

Oiticica, son of a senator, broke off studying law and medicine and turned to Romance philology . In 1911 he published his first volume of poetry. From 1914 he taught prosody at the drama school in Rio de Janeiro, from 1917 (after the publication of studies on phonology ) he was professor at the Colégio Pedro II .

In 1918 he took part in the anarchist uprising on November 18, was arrested and exiled to the prison island of Rasa. Following the intervention of intellectual friends and patrons, he was released in 1919, but further anarchist activities led to his arrest and (from 1924 to 1929) to his exile on the island of Ilha das Flores .

In 1929 he went to the University of Hamburg as a professor of Portuguese , for five years according to the contract, but was recalled to Brazil in 1930. In 1935 he taught Greek at the newly founded Universidade do Distrito Federal (today: Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro).

From 1944 Oiticica was a founding member of the Academia Brasileira de Filologia (Cadeira 27). A school in Salvador bears his name.
