life and career

Jean Dixon, born in Connecticut under the name Jean Jacques , completed her acting training in Paris with theater legend Sarah Bernhardt . During her stay in Paris she made her acting debut. After her return to the United States, she played in the play Wooden Kimono for the first time on Broadway in 1926 , where she took part in other plays such as Behold the Bridegroom and June Moon in the following years . Dixon mainly focused on depicting urban, quick-witted women with a biting sense of humor.

Although she was primarily a stage actress, the actress also took on a number of supporting roles in Hollywood films in the 1930s, often as the leading actress' best friend. In Fritz Lang's second Hollywood film Gehetzt (1937), she played the sister of Sylvia Sidney . She also played the cynical but vulnerable cook of an eccentric family in the screwball comedy My Man Godfrey (1936) and a smart friend of Cary Grant in George Cukor's The Bride 's Sister (1938).

The Bride 's Sister was Dixon's last film, even though she was only in her mid-forties, when she returned to the theater entirely after that. She later had three television appearances in 1956 and 1960. On Broadway, Dixon had her last appearance between 1959 and 1960 in The Gang's All Here . Jean Dixon was married to Edward Stevenson Ely from 1936 until his death in 1980. She herself died in February 1981, five months after her husband, at the age of 87.
