José Palmeiro Mendes
José Palmeiro Mendes OSB (born October 3, 1941 in São Paulo , real name Paulo Palmeiro Mendes) is abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Nossa Senhora do Monserrate do Rio de Janeiro .
Life
José Palmeiro Mendes joined the Congregation of Benedictine at and received on 24 June 1984, the priestly ordination . He was elected Abbot of Nossa Senhora do Monserrate do Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and Pope John Paul II confirmed the election on October 21, 1992 of the same year. Until May 6, 2003, as abbot of the territorial abbey of Nossa Senhora do Monserrate do Rio de Janeiro, an abbey with a bishopric- like function, he held the jurisdiction of a bishop , but not his power of consecration . He was a member of the local episcopal conference . In 2003 the function was transferred to the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro .
