from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

José Pinto Alcoforado de Azevedo e Sousa († 1820 in Portuguese Timor ) was a Portuguese officer and colonial administrator. From 1815 to 1820 he was governor of Portuguese Timor and Solor , whose sphere of influence also included other of the Lesser Sunda Islands .

Service on Timor

Before serving in Timor, Azevedo e Sousa was an artillery captain in Macau .

During his tenure in Timor, Lieutenant Colonel Azevedo e Sousa put down a Batugade rebellion . During the same period, however, the Dutch occupied the island of Pantar, which is part of the Portuguese sphere of influence, and on April 20, 1818 the important river port of Atapupu , which had been a major source of customs revenue for the Portuguese. Azevedo e Sousa complained to the central Dutch colonial administration in Batavia , threatened to take troops against the Dutch in Timor and demanded financial compensation. However, the Commission found that the Portuguese had misrepresented the facts. It is believed that Portugal retaliated for the loss by providing men and arms to the rebellious ruler of Amanuban in West Timor .

Azevedo e Sousa had an expedition search for oil in the colony.

In 1820 Azevedo e Sousa died in the colony. The administration of the colony was taken over by government councils until the arrival of the new governor Manuel Joaquim de Matos Góis in 1821.
