José António Afonso Rodrigues dos Santos , short JR Dos Santos (born April 1, 1964 in Beira , Mozambique ) is a multi-award-winning Portuguese journalist and lecturer in journalism at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa . In addition, he worked for a long time as a war correspondent in crisis areas around the world and received several awards for his reporting. As a TV presenter and spokesman for the RTP1 evening news , he is one of the most famous faces of the nation in Portugal . He also reached an audience of millions with his books and regular bestseller editions, in particular with Das Einstein Enigma (430,000 copies in France, 220,000 copies in Portugal), which is also to be filmed. A total of more than 3 million copies of his series around the code specialist Tomás Noronha have already been sold, published in up to 18 different languages. In 2018, for the third time in a row, JR Dos Santos received the Prémio 5 Estrelas as “Best Author in Portugal”, in which Cristiano Ronaldo was also voted “Sportsman of the Year”. In 2018, Dos Santos was awarded the Reader's Digest Magazine Readers Award for the seventh time in a row as “Portugal's most trustworthy author” and “Portugal's most trustworthy journalist”.

Life

Childhood and Adolescence in Africa

JR Dos Santos was born on April 1, 1964 as the elder of two sons in Beira in the then Portuguese colony of Mozambique . Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Tete Province, where he spent most of his childhood. In 1977 the family fled to Lisbon , where his parents divorced a short time later. After JR Dos Santos had lived with his mother in Portugal for a few years, he moved with his father to what was then the Portuguese colony of Macau .

Private life

In 1988, JR Dos Santos married Florbela Cardoso, with whom he has two daughters, Catarina Cardoso Rodrigues dos Santos (* 1991) and Inês Cardoso Rodrigues dos Santos (* 1998).

Journalist career

In 1981, JR Dos Santos gained his first experience in journalism at Radio Macau. In 1982 he returned to Lisbon, where he graduated in journalism. In 1986 he went to London for the BBC, since 1990 he has been working for the Portuguese broadcaster RTP1. He is a star there as a spokesman for the evening news, but also famous as a reporter, especially because of his outstanding and extensive war coverage . He also worked for many years as a journalism lecturer at the New University of Lisbon.

Career as an author

In 2002, JR Dos Santos wrote his first novel in just two weeks: A Ilha das Trevas , which sold around 71,000 times. He has now published 18 novels and 7 essays.

Awards

Some of the works by JR Dos Santos have received awards. Among other things, The Wrath of God received the Porto Literary Club Award in 2009 and The Devil's Hand received the award for best novel from the Portal de Literatura in 2012. Codex 632 and The Einstein Enigma were nominated for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2010 and 2012 found.

As an author, JR Dos Santos was honored annually from 2012 to 2018 by Reader's Digest as "Trusted Brand Novelist of Portugal" and in 2016, 2017 and 2018 as "5-Star Literary Personality of Portugal". In 2018 fnac Portugal named his novel Codex 632 as one of the 20 most important books of the last 20 years.

Furthermore, JR Dos Santos has received several awards for his journalistic activities. At the international level, he received three awards from the US television station CNN: the Best News Breaking Story of the Year (1994), for his story "Huambo Battle", which takes place at the time of the Angolan Civil War; the Best News Story of the Year for the Sunday , (1998), for his reportage "Albania Bunkers" and for his oeuvre the Contributor Achievement Award (2000), which is equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize in television journalism .
