José Vela ( 1922 - December 12, 2004 ), also known by the nickname El Bigotón ( Spanish for The Mustache ), was a Mexican football coach and player on the position of defender .
Life
Pepe Vela played in the 1950s for CD Zacatepec , with which he played the Supercup games in 1957 and 1959 , which were lost 2-1 to Chivas Guadalajara .
On July 19, 1953, he played his only international match for the Mexican national team as part of the 1954 World Cup qualification , which was won 8-0 against Haiti. At that time he was already under contract with Zacatepec. In the 1954/55 season he was part of the regular formation of the team that won the Mexican championship for the first time .
After his active career, Vela worked in 1977 as head coach at the first division club Deportivo Toluca FC and led his former club Zacatepec to the second division championship and promotion to the Primera División in the 1983/84 season . There he looked after the club until the 2-0 home defeat against Club Atlas on March 30, 1985, after which he was replaced by Fernando Dávila .
Pepe Vela died on December 12, 2004.
