Zacatepec de Hidalgo , originally and colloquially just Zacatepec , is a small town with 21,586 inhabitants (2010) in the southwest of the Mexican state of Morelos . Zacatepec de Hidalgo is the capital of the Municipio Zacatepec .
The origin of the name
The name Zacatepec is made up of the two words zacatl (grass or pasture) and tepetl (mountain) of the Nahuatl language and therefore means something like grass mountain or pasture mountain, a confirmation of the fertility of this region. The current name of the city was given later in honor of the independence hero Miguel Hidalgo .
history
A constant settlement of the region can be proven since 1690 and resulted from the numerous sugar cane plantations. The official establishment of the municipality of Zacatepec did not take place until December 25, 1938.
Agriculture and industry
Agricultural products are the main source of income for the community. The “Emiliano Zapata” sugar factory (named after its founder and not after the revolutionary of the same name who also lived in Morelos) is one of the top-selling in Mexico. The most important products after sugar cane are rice, corn and beans. Cattle breeding (cattle, pigs, goats and horses) is also of great importance for the region.
Sports
The most important sports club in the city is the Club Social y Deportivo Zacatepec , which was able to offer successful teams in the sports of baseball and basketball. However, he is most successful and best known for his soccer team, which between 1951 and 1985 spent a total of 27 seasons in the Primera División , the top division in Mexican club soccer, and even won two championship honors in the 1950s.
