José de Legorburu y Domínguez-Matamoros

José de Legorburu y Domínguez-Matamoros (* 1882 in Oviedo , Asturias , † 1935 in Bad Kissingen , Germany ) was a Spanish major , writer, poet and aviation pioneer.

Life

Legorburu came from an old Basque noble family ; the epithet Matamoros means translated Moors slayer . In 1899 he began his military career with the cavalry , in 1925 he was a commander .

Although he didn't officially get his pilot's license until 1916, he was the first to fly over the Strait of Gibraltar in 1912 . As a staunch Republican, Legorburu first became adjutant to President Niceto Alcalá Zamora in 1931 , and in 1933 attaché to the Spanish Air Force for Europe in Paris and London .

His grave is in the chapel cemetery in Bad Kissingen, Lower Franconia .
