José Barnabé de Mesquita (born March 10, 1892 in Cuiabá , Mato Grosso ; † June 22, 1961 ibid), commonly known as José de Mesquita, was a Brazilian poet of the Parnassian group , romantic and writer of history , historiographer , journalist , essayist , Genealogist and lawyer . He graduated from the Law Faculty of the University of São Paulo in 1913.

José de Mesquita was a judge at the Court of Justice of the State of Mato Grosso and its president for eleven consecutive years (1929-1940). He was among the founders of the Historical Institute (1919) and the Brazilian Academia Mato-Grossense de Letras in 1921. He was the President of the Academy from its inception until his death in 1961. His book Espelho de Almas (Mirror of the Soul) , Stories, was awarded by the Academia Brasileira de Letras in Rio de Janeiro in 1932. Since 1939 he was a corresponding member of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico (IHGB) based in Rio de Janeiro. He is the namesake of chair No. 7 of the Academia Sul-Mato-Grossense de Letras .
