The Josef-Effner-Gymnasium Dachau (JEG) is a science , technology and linguistic high school in Dachau with around 1,500 students. The school was named after the architect Joseph Effner .

School life

Measures due to increasing student numbers and introduction of the G8

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the grammar school and the district of Dachau have been struggling with the increasing number of students, which in 2008 reached a new high of 1,530 students. In 2011 the school opened a branch in nearby Steinstrasse due to the lack of space. The Realschule Dachau was previously housed there, which - also due to lack of space - moved into a larger new building. In the new branch office, three classes each of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade are taught all day.

Due to the high number of students, the shortage of teachers and the introduction of the eight-year grammar school, the relatively large selection of electives, especially in the field of sports, had to be severely restricted a few years ago. The JEG sports hall is also used by ASV Dachau on some evenings .

In order to secure the lunch supply, a food counter was set up in the former day care center as part of the general renovation, which Caritas supplies with food.

The school year 2016/17 the cafeteria was completely renovated. Today the CampusCafé is located in the Effner.

School newspaper

The JEG's school newspaper, ENTE, is published at irregular intervals, with interviews and style blossoms . She has already won a special prize for humor and satire in the school newspaper competition organized by the Ministry of Culture , the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the HypoVereinsbank . In 2008 the ENTE celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Student exchange

For students in the ninth grade there is an exchange of around one and a half weeks with St. Peter's Collegiate School in Wolverhampton , while the 8th grade takes part in an exchange with "la Rochelle" in France.

11th grade students can choose to take part in an American, Australian or French exchange of varying lengths, with the American and Australian exchanges only taking place every two years.

Terrain and Buildings

terrain

The area of the grammar school was only buildable after the amperes were straightened in the 19th century. Since the First World War , a lot of building activity began in the surrounding communities. Unteraugustenfeld was heavily populated in the municipality of Augustenfeld and densified in Polln. In between, the Hackenänger were built, which belonged to the market and the city of Dachau. There was also a move to the factory settlements and barracks of the Deutsche Werke in the communities of Prittlbach and Etzenhausen, which were freely rented out after these were closed and used by members of the SS from 1933. With the incorporation of these areas into the city of Dachau in 1939, plans began to build a new elementary school Dachau-Ost on the current site of the grammar school. Due to the Second World War , the plans were not implemented. The new elementary school Dachau-Ost was built after the war in the center of the new expellee settlements east of the areas mentioned. This is why this site was the ideal choice when the Dachau grammar school urgently needed new premises.

Buildings and Architecture

The building was erected in 1974 by Günter Behnisch , who also built the Munich Olympic Stadium . The facades consist mainly of break-proof glass. Inside and outside the building, round concrete pillars support the two upper floors, which are divided into two levels. Both upper floors are divided into four wings each, which in turn contain five to eight classrooms. This is how the room numbering results: The first number denotes the floor, the second the wing and the third number the room, so that for example 246 is on the second floor and there in the fourth wing.

The lecture halls for biology, physics and chemistry, the school administration and other diverse areas such as the auditorium, the kiosk and the day / leisure center are located on the ground floor. The three music halls and the art and handicraft rooms are also located here.

The gym is located separately to the east of the main building. It can be divided into three sub-halls with the help of white partition walls. There are six changing rooms above the equipment room next to the gym. In addition, the school grounds have a sports field that has been renovated since 2012.

Use of the Realschule building

Since the school year 2012/13, the Josef-Effner-Gymnasium has been using the former, adjacent building of the Dachau Realschule , which now houses the all-day branch of the school. Students attending this school have lessons until 4 p.m., so they are not given homework. The lesson is interrupted by two 15-minute and one 1.30-minute breaks. The somewhat older building will be repainted in the 2018/19 school year, and the windows will be replaced due to Aspest.
