Josef Černý (politician, 1885)
Josef Černý (born February 28, 1885 in Nepolisy ; † December 7, 1971 in New York ) was a Czechoslovak politician, a member of the Českoslovanská strana agrární ("Agrarian Party" for short) and minister.
Life
Josef Černý comes from an old farming family. He studied law and was involved in various agrarian associations and in the Agrarian Party itself. In 1918 he was elected to the Revolutionary National Assembly and in 1920 to the regular National Assembly, where he remained a member of parliament for several electoral terms until 1939.
From February 14, 1934 to September 22, 1938, Josef Černý held the office of Minister of the Interior several times in the following governments:
- Government of Jan Malypetr II (14.2.1934 - 4.6.1935)
- Government of Jan Malypetr III (June 4, 1935 - November 5, 1935)
- Government of Milan Hodža I (November 5, 1935 - December 18, 1935)
- Milan Hodža II government (December 18, 1935 - July 21, 1937)
- Milan Hodža III government (July 21, 1937 - September 22, 1938)
After the end of the war, Černý was arrested on August 9, 1945 and accused of collaboration . In a trial before the newly established Národní soud (National Court ), which took place from January 30, 1947 to April 21, 1947, the Prime Ministers Rudolf Beran and Jan Syrový as well as the Ministers Otakar Fischer and Jiří Havelka stood in addition to Josef Černý . Unlike his co-defendants, Beran and Syrový, the three ministers received no prison sentence and were released. After February 1948 he emigrated with his wife to the USA , where he chaired the exile Agrarian Party from 1948 to 1969.
