Jiří Havelka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jiří Havelka (born July 25, 1892 in Orjol , Russia, † June 5, 1964 in Hostomice pod Brdy ) was a Czech and Czechoslovak lawyer and politician. In the late 1930s he headed the president's office and was a minister without portfolio. During the time of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , he was also Minister of Transport.

Life, political career

Havelka attended a grammar school in Prague and studied law here. After studying law, Havelka worked in the Ministry of Railways. From 1933 he was on the board of the Supreme Administrative Court in Prague. Here he met Emil Hácha, who appointed him head of the presidential office after he took office in 1938. Havelka held the following ministerial posts:

From January 27, 1939 to February 3, 1940 he was Deputy Prime Minister of the Protectorate. As a member of both Protectorate Governments, Havelka represented them in negotiations with Reich Protector KH Frank and prevented a number of laws that were proposed by KH Frank - including laws that concerned the originality of the Czech nation and - at least in the early days - also some anti-Jewish laws. During this time, Havelka kept in contact with the domestic and foreign resistance . Jiří Havelka was increasingly criticized by the protectorate authorities because of his contacts with the resistance, until the Reich Protector ordered him to be dismissed from the government in April 1941. After Heydrich's arrival in Prague, Havelka - together with Alois Eliáš - was arrested on November 15, 1941, he lost his post and was placed under house arrest until the end of the war.

In January 1947 he was charged with collaboration in a so-called retribution court, but was acquitted. Nevertheless, he had to leave Prague with his family and lived in Hostomice pod Brdy, where he also died.
